The Agency’s innovative person-centered approach to health care takes into consideration the health status of entire families. Family health teams provide comprehensive and continuous care. Increasingly, UNRWA is focused on preventative approaches and interventions to protect again the onset of non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension. “Currently my disease is under control,” says Mariam. At age 11, Mariam discovered she had type 1 diabetes. As diabetes is a chronic disease, Mariam manages it with the support of doctors and nurses at her local UNRWA health centre. In addition to the necessary tests and essential medicines such as insulin, UNRWA health clinics offer her psychosocial support. This support was critical for helping Mariam cope with such a life-long serious health diagnosis. “UNRWA services are very important to help me stay healthy.”
